Blue Grotto, Maltei Island
The Groapa cave is approached by a road inclined on a high rock above the Mediterranean.The spectacular coastal landscape offers an interesting introduction to the site of nature.The blue cave is located in Wied Iz Zurrieq, where the copier Grand Marshall and a cavalry squadron shadowed the Turkish army on the eve of the great siege of 1565. According to mythology, the blue cave housed the sirens (marine nymphs) that captivated the sailors with their charms.Today, the marine landscape and limestone caves are an image of pure serenity.The water shines a bright blue in the sun. In the heights can take a boat guide in one of the praised traditional fishing vessels, called Luzzus.The vessels are left every 20 or 30 minutes, when the sea is calm.The 25-minute joyride moves through the sea over six caves, including the Groapa cave, a 30-meter-high cave, with a deep water pool.Try to visit at the beginning of the day, ideally before 2 pm, when the sunlight brightens the water.
