At the eastern end of the Amalfi peninsula, where the hills descend abruptly in the Gulf of Salerno, is the old Salernum, now Salerno.Salerno became the headquarters of the fascist government during World War II.The subsequent bombings and the invasion of the 1943 allies left only the partially ruined castle on the hill in the northwest of the city;a few arches of a Roman aqueduct; And the cathedral, the only view of a special interest for tourists.Saint Matthew is illustrated in a mosaic above the door; The magnificent bronze doors were made in Constantinople in 1099.In the ship, make sure you notice the two pulleys of the 12th century, with detailed decorations in the mosaic and nearby, a candlestick in similar style. In the end of the northern aisle is the ornate tomb of Margareta de Anjou (1412), and in the head of the great altar, the graveSalerno in 1085. The screens and the floor of the choir are decorated with mosaics. After visiting the Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum has some local antiques worth seeing if you do not intend to travel to Paestum.
