Due to its connections with the Philips electronic giant (a monument near the train station is dedicated to the son of the company), Eindhoven is known as “Lichtstad” – the city of light – and is one of the country’s industrial power plants.
Located on the Dommel river, the city began to grow rapidly with the establishment of Philips factories in 1891, and its industrial protrusion was consolidated with the founding of the car and truck manufacturer, DAF.
