Vieille Ville (old town)

Image 12 of 12

The old picturesque city of Nice, with the maze of narrow streets and cobbled streets, has a lively atmosphere, reminiscent of Italy.Little known as the "Babazouk ", Vieille Ville starts at the western end of Colline du Château (Hill Castle) and is marked by spacious boulevards, including Jardin Albert, Place Masséna and Promenade du Paillon. The southern end of the old city is bordered by Ponchettes market stalls at Cours Saleya, where fish sellers and dăcăşuşi sell fresh products. The famous Marché Aux Fleurs (Flower Market) is a traditional Provensal event that beautifies the street every morning (except Monday) with colorful flowers. On Quai des Etats-unis is the Ponchettes (Musée Dufy) gallery, a museum dedicated to Raoul Dufy's work. This museum presents a remarkable collection of Dufy's charming and vibrant paintings.Nearby (less than five minutes walk) on Quai des Etats-unis is Musée Alexis and Gustav-Adolf Mossa. The nineteenth-century artist Alexis Mossa was renowned for his landscape watercolor paintings, which present scenes from Nice, Côte d 'Azur and Provensal province. His son, Gustav-Adolf Mossa, also painted landscapes and later developed his own unique surreal style.
