Sanctuary of Bonaria

Surrounded by a hill top to the south-east of the city and a prominent landmark seen from Bastione San Remy, is the sanctuary of the Virgin Mary in Bonaria.The church hosts an revered statue that is believed to have stopped a storm in time to save the crew of a shipwreck in the Gulf of Sardinia, off the city of Cagliari, in the winter of 1307. In the Spanish Gothic church dates from the fourteenth century, and the largest neoclassic basilica was built in the 17th century.The Sanctuary Museum owns votive and archaeological discoveries.
