Image 13 of 17

Raising over the Danube, the Castle Hill in Budapest (Várhegy) contains many of the most important monuments and medi museums of the city. The top of the list of these impressive structures is the Buda Castle of the eighteenth century (Budavári Palota), a massive palace with 200 rooms that replaced a 13th century castle built to protect the fortress from Mongol and Tatar attacks. He now hosts a number of important museums. These include the Hungarian National Gallery in the main wing, while in the Southern wing, the History Museum in Budapest occupies four floors. In front of the castle, overlooking the Danube, there is an equestrian statue of Prince Eugen de Savoia, a hero of Turkish attacks on the city. The castle hill is worth exploring for its medi bands and Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. The whole historical complex is a site of the UNESCO World Heritage. As a large part of the city, Buda Castle is spectacularly illuminated at night, and the castle courts remain 24 hours a day.You can reach the castle on the restored historical railway of the Castle, leaving the Buda end of the bridge.
