Cultural Capital of Palma de Mallorca

Image 2 of 12

A beautiful capital, Palma de Mallorca offers the perfect combination of relaxation on the seafront and culture. Two impressive monuments, the cathedral and the castle, give this city the prestige of other capital in Europe. This monumental building dates from the 13th century, but was completed only in the seventeenth century. The splendid Gothic facade has sculptural decorations made by Guillermo Sagrera.Visitors are frightened by the inside of the cathedral, with its nave rising to a height of 44 meters. The massive space covers an area of 6,600 square meters. In splendid invitrari, including several windows (the largest dates from 1370), illuminates the sanctuary with an etheric glow. Most of the interior was remodeled by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí at the beginning of the 20th century. In Capilla Real (Royal Chapel), Gaudi's canopy giant is shaped like a crow's wreath.Capilla from Trinidad contains the sarcophagi of the Jaime II and III kings. From the terrace of the southern part of the cathedral, tourists can enjoy a magnificent view of the bay.Once it was a royal fortress, the unusual circular plan of the castle was influenced by the Eastern architecture.A bridge leads to the courtyard of the castle, which is lined with Romanesque and Gothic arches. The castle is open to the public and has a history museum and a chapel.
