In a command position above the city, Santa Bárbara Castle seems to rise from a rocky output. The location on the top of the hill on Mount Benacantil is a proof of the military purpose of the castle and has been a strategic asset from the Carthaginian era.The original Islamic Alcazar of the 9th century was captured from Mauri by the Christian prince Alfonso de Castilia. The victorious battle was on the day of Santa Barbara, explaining the name of the castle.During the reign of Philip II, the castle was renovated in Renaissance style.Tourists are amazed by the ancient halls of the castle, its fascinating history and amazing panoramic views. From this point of view, the perspective extends over the city, along the coastline and towards the northern hills.Visitors can see in Torreta, the old fortress;the splendid reception room of Philip II;and the wall revellín del bon repós.Temporary exhibitions are also organized at the castle throughout the year. The tour also visits the old city, Ayuntamiento (City Hall) and Explanade de España, among other top tourist attractions.
